Online Communication, Business Assessment

Image
I chose to assess a business called Basking Shark Scotland .  Website:  https://baskingsharkscotland.co.uk/ Instagram: @baskingsharkscotland Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/BaskingSharkScotland X:  https://x.com/baskingsharksco Does the company do a good job communicating on its website and social media platforms? Provide examples.  Yes, Basking Shark Scotland has a pretty slick, new-looking, up to date website and they post regularly on all of their social media channels, except X. ( because it's kind of a dumb channel and no one likes it or actually uses it ) Their content is visually pleasing and on brand. On the company website, what is featured at the top, in the middle, and at the bottom of the home page? Why do you think they have it organized this way? In your opinion, is it effective? The top of the homepage has a menu bar, a cool logo, and a book now button. There's also a big catchy slogan and the background is a map of Scotland with their l...

Marc Prensky's "Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants"

Image
According to Prensky, the digital immigrant/native divide are those who grew up without digital technology and those who did grow up with digital technology. The preferred learning styles between these two groups can vary quite a bit. Digital natives are often good at multi-tasking, utilizing technology like computers, ipads, and the internet for education. They are use to processing information at a very fast pace. Digital immigrants work at a slower pace and may prefer physical material to read or even searching a library for a source. They might prefer an in person lecture over a video recorded lecture and though they may have experience with digital technology they don't always reach for it as a first resource the way digital natives do. There is a transition taking place where digital immigrants are currently teaching digital natives and having to come to terms with the differences in learning styles between the two groups.                ...

Knapp's Relationship Model

Image
Mark Knapp developed a model that describes the stages related to the forming and ending of relationships. My story is one of an interpersonal relationship slowly coming apart over time. I have a dear friend I met about 15 years ago and we've drifted apart and together many times over the years. More recently, since I have young kids and she doesn't, we start to find that we have little to talk about. Our relationship wobbles somewhere between circumscribing and stagnating. My family moved across the world a year ago and we don't get to spend time in person together, which I feel is valuable to a relationship that is already challenged by our life stage differences. This feels a bit like the avoidance stage but it's certainly not intentional. Our circumscribing and stagnating stage mostly consists of exchanging reels or memes on instagram and commenting here and there about kids, family, the dog, and work. These are pretty mundane and safe conversational topics. I kno...

Week 2 Discussion

Image
photo: www.artemishospitals.com 2.   Is there an ideal number of “friends” or connections individuals have on Facebook that can improve their mental health?          I don't believe there is an ideal of number of "friends" or connections on Facebook that can improve an individuals mental health. If mental health was contingent on the number of "friends" or connections on Facebook then I am certain that number would greatly vary based on the individual and the type of content they consume on Facebook.  4. Do social networking sites have any responsibility in promoting mental health in their users? If so, how might they go about doing so?     I don't believe social media sites have any obligation in promoting mental health to their users. First, they would have to define what is considered good mental health and then they would have to decide how to deliver that. By definition, social media is user driven content. Algorithms are created to cont...

About Me

Image
Hello! I'm from Seattle, Washington but currently living in Amsterdam, Netherlands. I'm working towards a degree in Crop and Soil Science as well as a certificate in GIS. I am scheduled to graduate in the spring and would like to attend grad school next fall. In my free time I like to explore Amsterdam with my family, travel, read, and eat good food. An interesting fact is that I'm a non-traditional student and when I graduate in June it will be 19 years since I started my undergraduate journey! Slow and steady. This term, I'm interested in learning the nuances of effective online communication. I also hope we explore the mess of misinformation that utilizes online communication, how it devolved and how we can deal with it. I primarily use online communication for work and school. Privacy in online environments has become more important to me as I've gotten older and had kids so I tend to stay off social media channels. I took a couple of communication courses early...
