About Me

Hello!

I'm from Seattle, Washington but currently living in Amsterdam, Netherlands. I'm working towards a degree in Crop and Soil Science as well as a certificate in GIS. I am scheduled to graduate in the spring and would like to attend grad school next fall.

In my free time I like to explore Amsterdam with my family, travel, read, and eat good food. An interesting fact is that I'm a non-traditional student and when I graduate in June it will be 19 years since I started my undergraduate journey! Slow and steady.

This term, I'm interested in learning the nuances of effective online communication. I also hope we explore the mess of misinformation that utilizes online communication, how it devolved and how we can deal with it. I primarily use online communication for work and school. Privacy in online environments has become more important to me as I've gotten older and had kids so I tend to stay off social media channels.

I took a couple of communication courses early on in my collegiate career. Communications was actually my very first degree choice! I'm looking forward to the speeches we have to write and record for this term. I think that will be good practice. And as I said above, I would like to learn more about how to communicate effectively online.

Instagram Comment Wars

 I really struggled, initially, to find a comment war because 1. I'm not on facebook anymore and refuse to reactivate. It's a bit too much of a cesspool. 2. I think comment moderation is really strong on the platforms I use or the accounts I follow on instagram. and 3. Even posts on reddit's homepage have sort of turned into an echo chamber. Anything negative was so buried I couldn't find it, and I wanted some obvious arguments at the top of a post. If mental health was contingent on the number of "friends" or connections on Facebook then I am certain that number would greatly vary based on the individual and the type of content they consume on Facebook.  4. Do social networking sites have any responsibility in promoting mental health in their users? Rabbit Hole

Rabbit Hole is a podcast hosted by The New York Times tech columnist Kevin Roose and produced by The New York Times. The podcast is an 8-part narrative that explores how the internet is changing and how that is effecting society, specifically through radicalization. It tracks the story of Caleb Cain, a young man with moderate political views who initially uses Youtube to watch video game content but is pulled deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole, as it's called. (Roose, 2020) The rabbit hole is the effect on users who use the internet for research or entertainment but end up delving deeper and deeper into increasingly similar content.
