Marc Prensky's "Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants"

According to Prensky, the digital immigrant/native divide are those who grew up without digital technology and those who did grow up with digital technology. The preferred learning styles between these two groups can vary quite a bit. Digital natives are often good at multi-tasking, utilizing technology like computers, ipads, and the internet for education. They are use to processing information at a very fast pace. Digital immigrants work at a slower pace and may prefer physical material to read or even searching a library for a source. They might prefer an in person lecture over a video recorded lecture and though they may have experience with digital technology they don't always reach for it as a first resource the way digital natives do. There is a transition taking place where digital immigrants are currently teaching digital natives and having to come to terms with the differences in learning styles between the two groups.

As someone born firmly in the millennial years, l I sit in this weird zone of not having much digital technology exposure until I was nearly a teenager so I've kind of seen both sides of the coin and have had more time to adapt than a true digital immigrant.

I understand the perspectives of the immigrant and the native and I can see that my preferences dip into both sides for different things. For example, I have a hard time multi-tasking and I really need to sit down and focus on one task at a time. I prefer reading physical copies if it's lengthy material but digital copies are fine for shorter articles. I like the flexibility that being an e-campus student has afforded me but I also really value face to face discussions. Despite being an e-campus student, I do still adhere to a somewhat consistent schedule in order to complete my work. I think all of these examples sort of have me straddling the line between a native and an immigrant - more so a native. Perhaps my status as a line straddler is how I'm able to work and learn so well independently.
